How to Make Specific Changes in Google Docs Without Altering Others

How do I change a part of the google doc. It seems like add or replace are the only options. Just some context. When someone emails Lindy, to make changes to the google doc, I'd like Lindy to make the 1 change to the doc, but keep the rest of the doc. Any ideas?
