Best Practices for Outbound Campaign Automation Setup

Best practices for setting up an outbound campaign? I have 3 paths with 4 emails each. I've figure out how to delay the emails so that the cadence is good but and wondering what best practices are for making sure engaged prospects get out of the automation. Set condition to "if user clicks; if user replies" then send them down a different path?
